Description of Services
The Highway department is made up of one superintendent, one secretary, one foreman, six laborers/truck drivers and one mechanic. There are two divisions which includes the highway and fleet maintenance. The Highway Department maintains all public way totaling approximately 72 road miles. We also clean and repair over 1000 catch basins and drop inlets manholes throughout the town. Other maintenance activities include:

  • Inventory and maintenance of hundreds of street and roadway signs
  • Sidewalk and curb installation and repair
  • Brush cutting and minor tree pruning.
  • Street sweeping
  • Pothole repair
  • Roadway paving and maintenance
  • Drainage construction, repair and maintenance
  • Snow and Ice removal during the winter months.

The fleet maintenance department is responsible for the maintenance of all town vehicles and machinery, including Highway, Council on Aging, Cemetery/Parks, Board of Assessors and the Board of Health.

Used Motor Oil
The Highway Department is looking for Used Motor Oil. NO anti-freeze or other chemicals will be allowed. Residents may drop off the used motor oil at the Highway Department Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. ONLY.

Winter Snow Policy
The Templeton Highway Department is pleased to issue "A Resident's Guide to Winter Snow Removal Operations and Procedures". The intent of this pamphlet is to advise Templeton residents of the Highway Department's winter snow plowing and sanding objectives and to obtain your assistance so that Town roads can be restored to normal conditions as promptly as possible after a winter storm.

Snow Removal
There is a pile of sand/salt mixture available for residents ONLY located at the edge of the driveway of the Highway Department. Salt is mixed with sand to keep it from freezing. Please limit the amount to 3 five-gallon pails per trip. This is NOT for commercial or industrial businesses. At no time is anyone allowed to take salt from sheds.

Driveway Permits
As noted in the Town By-Law, Article XVI-Regulation of Driveways: "No person shall build or rebuild a driveway at a point where such driveway enters onto any Town Way without first obtaining permission from the Highway Superintendent who shall grant such permission and may specify the requirements for said building or rebuilding of such driveway at the point where it enters a Town Way."
Driveway Permits must be obtained from the Highway Department prior to the start of any work. A permit fee of $75.00 will be charged.

Trench Permits
Please be advised that any utility, private contractor, or any person(s) who intends to break any street or sidewalk surface, or excavate any road or shoulder should contact the Templeton Highway Department is regards to obtaining a Trench Permit. A permit fee of $100.00 will be charged and is non-refundable. Attached are the specifications for Trench Construction and Excavation within a public way. Trench Permit applications must be obtained from the Highway Department prior to the start of any work.
